NZ Yellowtail Kingfish - known locally as haku or kingi - are in a class of their own. Powerful ocean predators renowned for the speed, stamina and size, they represent an amazing achievement for spearfishers and sit right at the top of the dining table.

Our boat KIWA, is a safe, highly capable dive vessel led by an experienced local crew who know these waters inside out - giving international divers the ultimate shot at landing a trophy Kingfish. We keep our groups small, ensuring safety is always our top priority.

Kingfish is arguably New Zealand’s finest eating fish. Our local fishery is very healthy, we’re dedicated to keeping it that way. We practice low-impact, sustainable harvesting - only targeting species in healthy condition and using everything we catch.

Travelling from overseas?

We offer targeted trips for international visitors, complete with top-tier gear hire, local accommodation and transfers from Auckland International Airport. Limited dates available.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Kingfish can be targeted year-round, but the prime season runs from late spring through autumn (November to May).

  • Our standard departure is Whitianga and around the Coromandel Peninsula, but we can organise anywhere in New Zealand.

  • Peak summer dates tend to book out quickly due to high demand. We recommend you try to book your Kingfish hunt at least 2-3 months early, especially if you require airport transfers or gear hire. 


  • You're welcome to bring your own setup, or we can arrange premium spearfishing gear hire for you when finalising your booking.


  • Zero experience is needed. We can start you from the basics and help build your confidence and skills in the water.

  • Depth depends entirely on your experience and breath-hold capability. Kingfish can be in as shallow waters as 1 metre.


  • We follow a sustainable, low-impact philosophy - taking only what we need and using every part of the catch. On board your fish is immediately bled and iced to ensure quality. Your catch is yours to take home at the end of the day. For an extra touch, we
